Coin World - World Mint Profiles 2024 Edition

Since 1835, Osborne Coinage Company has been the go-to source for custom minting of silver and copper rounds, coins, key tags, medals, challenge coins, and personalized tokens. Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, Osborne is the oldest private mint in the United States, as well as one of the few businesses still in operation since the early 1800’s.

Coin World top mints 1-24 _2-15-24-42Having a commitment to offering 100% U.S.A made products has been a staple of Osborne’s since the company’s inception, which is how Osborne has found itself making products for a wide variety of uses and applications, including safety coins, awards, Mardi Gras doubloons, employee gifts, commemoratives, political memorabilia, souvenirs, numismatic quality silver rounds, and most recently, silver bullion.

Some highlights of Osborne’s history include creating campaign tokens for US Presidents like Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Franklin Roosevelt, and more. In the 1900s, we created and patented a machine to produce “ORCO Scrip”, counterfeit-resistant coins that were specific to coal mines and lumber mill industries. Workers were paid with specific scrip that did not have value outside of the company owned properties.

During World War II, the Office of Price Commission asked Osborne Coinage to make food ration tokens. With more than 1,000 skilled employees working 24 hours a day, the company manufactured 5 billion red and blue fiber ration tokens, as many as 80 million a day, to make change for ration stamps, thus saving coinage metals for the war effort.

In the 1990’s Osborne Coinage entered the rapidly growing casino token market sparked by riverboat gaming legalization in Mississippi and Illinois. In a highly successful partnership with technology leader IDX Inc., Osborne perfected the X-Mark Optical Security System and it took off like wildfire in gaming markets around the world.  The X-Mark System stopped counterfeiting by allowing a casino’s games to only accept their own tokens. To date, over 250,000,000 tokens have been sold worldwide.

Osborne collaborates with some of the top companies in the world, including General Mills, Shell, and McDonalds. In 2018, Osborne created more than 4 million coins to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac all around the world.

Recently Osborne Coinage has focused on high-quality collectible coins, partnering with top consumer brand Franklin Mint. Through a joint venture with Canada’s own national mint, Osborne was chosen to produce a variety of circulating and non-circulating numismatic coins issued for countries around the world. Osborne currently produces numismatic rounds and select currencies for several countries’ central banks. New for 2023, we are entering the silver bullion market with one-ounce .999 fine silver rounds.

Osborne Coinage and its family of brands (Osborne Coinage, Osborne Mint, TokensDirect, and Van Brook of Lexington) provide products to virtually every sector in today's marketplace. Many people have held our products and used them in various ways, from entertainment to business marketing and numerous initiatives that support awareness, advocacy, fundraising, celebrations, company programs, government programs, and more.
