A Peek into the Cosmos - the Galaxies and Nebulae Collection

In the Beginning.....

Osborne Mint is excited to introduce a unique innovation that’s just out of this world, the Galaxies and Nebulae Spinner Collection. It’s is a set of 6, one ounce .999 fine silver rounds. Each comes in proof finish and depicts some of the most amazing phenomena from deep space. The common reverse features 3D images of a spiral galaxy, the Hubble Space Telescope and a land based radio telescope.

All six rounds feature a full color image generated using files downloaded from the Hubble Space Telescope and mated with earth based radio telescope data by renowned astrophographer Rob Gendler.

Dr. Gendler captures the vibrant colors generated from light and radio spectra that make these gorgeous images. The natural forms and colors of the universe are then revealed using modern photographic techniques.

The first coin in the set is the M 57 Ring Galaxy. The Ring Nebula (also cataloged as Messier 57, M57 or NGC 6720) is a planetary nebula in the northern constellation of Lyra. Such objects are formed when a shell of ionized gas is expelled into the surrounding interstellar medium by a red giant star, which was passing through the last stage in its evolution before becoming a white dwarf.

The Galaxy’s name and its astral coordinates are made with Osborne Mint’s COIN-SHOW™ design technique where the minted coin’s surface is allowed to show through to the color layer. For astronomy fans, the coordinates around the outer edge specify the direction to a point someplace in the celestial sphere where the object can be observed.

The best part about the coins, they SPIN! Pop the coin out of the two piece capsule and give it a twirl with your finger – slow the speed of revolution and watch mesmerizing visual effects - swirling spirals, pulsating gas clouds and whirling bar galaxies. Each coin has a clear coat applied to the surface so it can be handled without fear of ruining the finish. Any fingerprints will wipe right off. Each image in the Collection was chosen to generate a different spinning effect. Osborne licensed 6 amazing images for 2018.

Finally there’s a coin that’s dynamic, not just pretty, and you can do more than just flip it heads or tails.

Highlights:

  • Contains 1 oz of .999 fine Silver.
  • Comes in a protective plastic capsule with a certificate of authenticity.
  • Limited mintage of 1,500 pieces.
  • Obverse: Features images that were selected for its visual impact and the effect created when spinning. Each spinner displays the phenomenon’s name and the astronomic location using a system of right ascension (RA) and declination (DEC). Together the coordinates specify the direction of a point in the celestial sphere where the object can be observed.
  • Reverse: Features the major data sources researchers rely upon, the Hubble Space Telescope and land based radio telescopes.
  • Edge: Individually engraved with a unique serial number.
  • Imagery by: Renowned astrophotographer Robert Gendler.
